Sperm Count Vs. Sperm Concentration
Although the terms “sperm count” and “sperm concentration” are often used interchangeably, they are not quite the same thing.
Sperm concentration, also called sperm density, refers to the number of sperm found in one milliliter of a semen sample. A device known as a counting chamber is typically used to count sperm in order to determine the number of sperm present in a sample.
A sperm density is considered normal if it is between 15 million and 200 million or more sperm per milliliter of ejaculate. If you have less than 15 million sperm per ml of semen, your sperm density is considered to be low.
The sperm count is the total number of sperm that are present in an entire sample of semen. In order to calculate the sperm count, the sperm concentration is multiplied by the total volume of the sample.
A normal sperm count ranges from 39 million to 928 million or more sperm in an entire semen sample.
If you have less than 15 million sperm per ml of semen, or less than 39,000,000 sperm total in a semen sample, your sperm count is considered to be low.
Which Is More Important, Sperm Count Or Sperm Concentration?
As mentioned, the sperm count is the total number of sperm in an entire semen sample, calculated by multiplying sperm concentration times the semen sample volume.
Because most of the ejaculate contains secretions from the seminal and prostate glands, sperm count is considered to be a more important number than sperm concentration.
